Gail Baxter volunteer, is organising a sponsored walk in aid of Beyond the Battlefield on Sunday 21st August 2016 at Castlewellan Lake/Forest Park, gathering in the car park from 10.30am onwards. Gail is doing this in memory of Glen Mawhinney & Dean Caudley who where clients of Beyond the Battlefield Veterans Charity on the Jubilee Road Newtownards. Two Trophies’ will be given out on the day in commemoration of these two brave soldiers for those with the most sponsorship collected.
Dean was a member of the Mercian Regiment and had his leg blown off in Afghanistan. As a result of the trauma of losing his leg he developed cancer. After a successive second brave fight for his life he died at 29 years old. Dean was being treated for mental injuries sustained whilst serving his country by Beyond the Battlefield, who are presently still fighting for his rights in death.
Glen was a member of the Royal Irish Regiment 1st Btn. His illness began in 2003, he got this illness whilst serving; he had a long hard fight over many years to regain his health but unfortunately died in November 2015. Glen was being looked after by Beyond the Battlefield who successfully won his case for which he only got the benefits for a short time. We continue to fight for the rights for his wife and family. Glen also died from cancer at 44 yrs old.
Both these soldiers died in the service of their country. Some give little, these two men gave all. Their families continue to require the support of Beyond the Battlefield who will not let them down. We have a long fight ahead, which we will ultimately win.
We require your support in commemoration of these two young soldiers, for the many service people we have worked with in the past, the many we work with at present and the many we will work with in the future.
Pledge your support by sponsoring or donating to Gail`s walk, hats off to you Gail well done, our clients and ex-service people need this support so that Beyond the Battlefield may continue in their mission to support them and their families by way of counselling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Homelessness, War Pensions’, Funerals, Military Medals and much more. Gail has already been working tremendously hard on this gathering support from Michelle Ferguson , Noreen Gray, your colleagues at Menarys Newtownards, our friends and students at Costa coffee Newtownards, local Community groups, Ards Police station, Ards Fire and Ambulance stations, Newtownards Sea Cadets, Regiments and Associations and a lot of other friends and comrades of Beyond the Battlefield and hope to gain the support of the local TA units.
We urge the public and the Government to look at the overall picture and gather insight as to how we move forward in Northern Ireland to benchmark how we look after our Veterans to give them the fair and just treatment they so richly deserve and a much needed Veterans Centre. Beyond the Battlefield continuously strive to lobby Government on many Veterans issues.
We need to save lives and help beat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the co morbidity issues connected to it. Pull on your Trainers and help people suffering from PTSD , this is a far reaching challenge however, every mile covered and every penny raised brings Beyond the Battlefield that much closer to supporting another family in distress.
To all those clients that we have given much help to in the past, put something back and support your comrades coming behind you.
Anyone who requires a sponsorship form may collect from Gail or Annemarie or contact them on 02891225610 www.beyondthebattlefield.org
